LASIK Consultation Q & A

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a surgery that corrects vision problems including:

  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism

During LASIK, your eye surgeon reshapes your corneas with a laser. This gentle reshaping corrects refractive errors and allows you to see without vision correction in most cases. But, some patients still need reading glasses for close-up vision following their LASIK procedure, such as when using a computer or reading.

What is included in a LASIK consultation?

During your LASIK consultation at American Vision Center, Dr. Tallis determines whether you're a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Dr. Tallis dilates your eyes for this exam, so he can look closely at the inside of your eyes, and also checks your eye focus to get precise measurements of your vision problem.

Dr. Tallis checks the shape and thickness of your cornea, the health of your retina, and all the other significant aspects of eye health during this exam. After the exam, Dr. Tallis will discuss your goals with you to help you decide whether LASIK surgery can help you get the vision you want.

Am I a good LASIK candidate?

There are many factors involved in determining LASIK candidacy, including:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Good general health, with no uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disease, or collagen vascular disease
  • Good eye health, with no problems like cataracts, keratoconus, or glaucoma
  • Stable prescription for a year or more

Your LASIK candidacy may also depend on other factors, including corneal thickness and how severe your refractive error is. If you have a severe refractive error, you may not be a candidate.

Who performs my LASIK surgery?

If Dr. Tallis determines that you're a good LASIK candidate and you're ready to go ahead with the procedure, he refers you to a trusted local eye surgeon who will perform the LASIK procedure. Dr. Tallis and your eye surgeon will co-manage your care, so you'll return to American Vision Center for your post-op checkups after LASIK surgery.

LASIK surgery can help you enjoy life free (or nearly free) from contacts and glasses. If this sounds good to you, book your LASIK consultation at American Vision Center using the online tool or by calling the office now.
